Welcome to our blog

We (Adam & Chelsea) are devoted to an epic journey of minimalism & conservation. Our goals are to live out of a 27ft Winnie w/ our dog Sadie, find innovative/green ways to live off "the land" (e.g. compost on tow platform & green roof) & travel the US w/ contract vet work & Etsy paying the bills. It'll be a long journey, so keep an eye out! (read more)

Black Friday: A Market Day Success

So 6 months after being approached by Cat Rocketship (the organizer of Market Day in Des Moines, IA), Chelsea and I took our first stab at running a booth during Black Friday.  We decided to stick with my records and save Chelsea's vintage goodness for another Market Day.

Hairy Vinyl was well represented on the second floor of the Papa John's Center in Des Moines, IA.

All of my 6 or 7 Beatles records sold.

Here's a shot of my neighboring booths to the left as they set up shop.  Wish we had a shot of this hallway during the event, but we were too busy making money and talking to some amazing people.

Chelsea and I can't wait until next Market Day season, this May.

BRINGIN' HOME THE 'BAGO!

So we leave to go pick up the 'bago TONIGHT! We have to drive almost to Arkansas, 6 hours away. I think if we weren't so excited we might actually realize how loooong a drive that's gonna be. Shockingly, we don't really know what kind of Winnebago we own and although I've ruthlessly been scouring the internet to find out, I've come up empty...until this morning! This morning I stumbled upon GOLD...The original advertisements for all of the Winnies' made in 1972. I think I've narrowed our 'bago down to either the Chieftain D-27C or the Chieftain D-27CL. What's the difference you may ask? A whopping three extra inches in the bedroom. But what's really important is that it turns out we might have a 27 footer on our hands instead of the 24 footer we'd originally thought! And that my friends...is alright with me!
Here's what I've spent my whole morning looking at when I should have been studying for Boards.

They compared life in a Winnebago to 'fine and gracious living.' I have no idea how Southern belles and slavery mansions play into that.

Can I just say I love the color scheme (no, not really). Winnie seekers back then could choose between the luscious color palate of Mesa Orange, Siesta Gold or Moss Green. I'm pretty sure we scored Mesa Orange. I'm almost afraid of what we're going to see when we open the trailer door. On the upside, my research has uncovered that we do indeed have a SEPARATE shower; rather than the shower, toilet, sink combo crammed into the same room creating a situation where peeing in the shower becomes totally unavoidable!

The D-27C...soooo excited! Have a glorious weekend!

TWO REASONS (OF MANY) WHY WE BOUGHT THIS THING...

Chelsea and I searched the world over for the perfect home on wheels...well we looked all over Craigslist and eBay but that's kinda the same thing, right?... and finally we found this beaut! We wanted a mobile option that would give us the right amount of space for 2 lovers and a Sadie (our rottweiler), room for some home improvement, but the right amount of things going right that we could devote most of our time and energy on IMPROVING and not just FIXING (you get the point).
With all of that being said, I wanted to address the two most interesting (and probably the most trivial) of reasons for buying this RV over any other RV or travel trailer...
1. All proceeds from the eBay auction we won this thing in went to the Art Feeds programs. If you'd like to learn more about Art Feeds, click here... www.artfeeds.org
2. Before this, our RV was the set of a NeverShoutNever music video. The video is actually worth watching. And I'm not just saying this because we have the unique conversation piece of "My home was the central theme of a badass music video." Here it is...

Like I said, there are many reasons why we bought this RV, but I just thought I'd share these two. Enjoy being informed fans!

INTRODUCING...THE NEW 'BAGO!

We did it! We closed the deal on what Adam likes to call "our first home." A 1972 Winnebago Chieftain. Actually, closing the deal really just consisted of me, waiting nervously by my computer ready to hit 'enter,' 30 seconds before the clock struck 0. It was thrilling! And luckily I didn't choke because we're now the happy parents of our new bago baby. That's what I'm calling it until we head down to Joplin, Missouri on Saturday to pick it up. It will remain 'bago baby' or 'it' until we meet it, genderize it and name it. I love it!
Bago baby has a rich history that I can't wait to tell you about. But for now, I'll just leave you with these pretty little pictures of our new home to enjoy!

THE BEAST

For a while Adam and I have lusted over the idea of tossing off the constraints of traditional "life" and making it up as we go. And to us that really just means selling everything we own and burying our roots in a home that is constantly moving. I graduate in May. At that point I will have finished 22 years of school. 22 YEARS! Ouch. The idea of printing off resumes and going for interviews just seems like another notch on the belt of what is expected and I'm not interested...YET. So we've decided the best choice for us is nomad living.

Introducing: The Beast!!

So this beauty is a 1971 Winnebago Brave converted into tailgate headquarters. If you can see past the annoyingly happy cardinal on the side you'll know this girl comes stocked with a fully functional...everything. Working refrigerator, stove, furnace, generator...and she's driveable. I think that for 39 years old that's pretty awesome. The downside: she borderline made me piss my pants when we opened her up on the highway, she sways like crazy. But she moves and we can get her up to 62 which suits us just fine.

The Beast is in the running, but we've really got our hopes on another gorgeous girl. We'll know if she's ours in a few days. I can't wait!!
